If the game is dead....
why is this forum still active? And GWOnline gets more messages. A game dies from lack of interest. GW is still alive, if not in full health.
Three updates last week....in one friggin day...kind of proves there is still active interest on Anet's side, as well.

First answer... Prophecies is like as low as $.99 on eBay. People give the game a try at that price. New players are actually pretty common... ran into a whole slew of them today actually. And forums ALWAYS outlive the purpose they were intended to serve.
Second answer. Suppose you had no active interest in flipping burgers, but you worked at McDonalds... so you had to flip a few burgers, does that indicate active interest? Or just a job?
Put simpler, the guy doing updates is the chicken. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, right? The chicken? She's involved. That pig? He's committed.

This for me also was a sign of things going downhill. It was as if ANET just said "we're putting most of our team into another project now, expect nothing else in GW1".

For a game that was supposed to while away the time until Hellgate: London came out, Guild wars has certainly given me a lot of fun for a whole year - I can't think of any other game where I'd play for so long and still have fun with the game.
No game is forever. That's the idea GW was built up on. And if anything, it backfired because too many people play the game for more time

Hear that, that is the sound of the Guild Wars 1 servers falling down the staircase and snapping their necks 8 months after Guild Wars 2 comes out. Oh, what a horrible sound that is.... ewww.. 911?

I still run a BBC emulator to occasionally play Elite. 23 years old......
Age's post got me thinking about several things; one was modding, which can really expand the lifespan of a game. Some games would have been a lot better if fans had been allowed to mod them (eg Tomb Raider), but Eidos stopping "modability" never hurt those ones commercially. However I'm dubious about in an online game. New maps and quests would be great, but the downside would be that we would all end up with +120hp weapons as quest rewards. So I dunno if it is possible in GW. Anyway, map generation seems to be the toughest issue for fan mods.
The second was Company Hate; everyones seems to hate Beth on their forums, most people seem to hate Anet here, yet we're all playing their games.
|
The hate for Beth is because Oblivion wasn't like Morrowboring and the hate for Morrowboring was because it wasn't like Daggerfall (still the best game in the series to me). The hate for Anet is because they moved away from skill > time promotion of the origional game and have turned the game into something else. But, they never said that skill would be > time forever. It was just promoted in the FIRST chapter when it was new. But, they found people were actually quitting because there's nothing else to do once you complete the main story and the quests (except boring repetitive farming for mere items or gold). So they added stupid silly titles like drunkard for the kiddies who love that stuff cause they think it makes them adults to be drunk lol or have a drunk title. Just wait till they grow up out of that childish state and actually do get drunk and have a hangover then they won't think it's so funny and mature. Now people might hate boring repetitive farming, but, they might like boring repetitive farming for silly titles. You can prance around with your title on you can't prance around in cities with your rare skinned weapons or offhands (which I think is rather stupid not to be able to do. You can pull out stupiid mini pets, but, you can't display your weapons and offhands).
GW1 was basically an experiment to see how things would go. They clearly see combining PVP with PVE was a MAJOR mistake as it pissed a number of people off after every update and nerf to their characters those that played PVE only got screwed every single time. Those that played PVP whinned constantly and were never satisfied. They get beat once by a build and it's FOTM and it needs to be NERFED screams around the globe. GW2 will be different, very different from GW1 you can bet. People will whine and scream about that also saying it's not skill > time boo hoo. lol

I can it was Everquest and it gave me 5 years of fun an enjoyment. It was called EVERquest because that is what it was. You could play that game a lifetime and never see everything or complete it before a new expansion came out. I think it has 8 or 9 expansions now. I'd still play IT if it was FREE (no monthly fee). But, $14-$15 a month adds up and when you quit one of these mmorpgs you take away nothing but the memories. That is the only thing really that is appealing about the GWs series is it has no monthly fee. But, it also has miniscule content as well. In reality it's nothing more than an offline rpg that you can play online. It's not even a persistant world like a Neverwinter Nights and that's an offline game you can play online and with many people on a server. GWs is like that roller coaster ride at 6 flags you love to ride over an over, but, eventually gets old and boring and you look for another ride to enjoy. If the developers had of randomized every zone or at least a random area to play in the longevity of this game could have been longer. But, as it is only the casual players might get a few more years of enjoyment out of it, but, of course us hardcore with all the good loot will be gone and so there will be nothing for them to buy from each other cause they can't get to the good stuff like we can. And we'll be playing GW2.

Well, I'll keep playing until GW2 comes out, and it all depends on how different GW2 is as to whether I stop playing GW1 or not. If it's pretty much the same but with better graphics then I'll just play GW2, but if it's different they I'll carry on playing both.

You want to know what a dead on line game looks like, go check out Diablo2 in it's curent state. People are still playing, but only those that use hacks.Wich makes it impossible to join a game in hardcore without getting killed by an TPPK bot. It literally happens every single time. NO exeptions.
If finding a party becomes impossible due to institutionalized cheating, an on line game becomes a pure solo job and loses all the appeal it once has. That's one of the reasons why GW will live on for a wile: The douches have not too many tools to bully the legits out of the game. Exept trash talking perhaps.

Duping in GW has by no means the effect it has in Diablo2. A D2 duper kills any legit with one hit because of his duped ethereal breath of the dying berserker axe, wile a GW duped item doesn't give any combat benefit at all.

Guild Wars was available to cut a niche market for itself and make it profitable.
It was unique business model with no monthly charges and they made money on it by campaigns and expansions
Having said that anet had lot to learn from GW and what people like
Ao in fact i feel that GW2 is going to be far more better
There challenges are
1)They are going to remove level caps but get rid of excessive grinding
2) Instances ... Free to roam world will be there atleast in some places
3) Big party sizes I guess 25+ killing dragons etc
4) Casual pvp Vs HArd core PVP
5) Click to point They said they will remove it.
6) Marriages This would seem lame to many but I finsd it interesting
They already have the base ,I personally would shell out out momney for GW2 just to see what kind of transition happens from my monuments .
Gw1 will die a natural death when the population dies out and it will happen
Till then njoy

GW is like a tomato or carrot - it's ,,alive'', but it doesn't talk, move or do anything. I would say that games like Neverwinter Nights, Ragnarok Online or Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are in much better condition...
EPO - If you don't know - people usually don't play on public games, unless for fun. But if someone wants serious PvP, there are special leagues you in which you can play fair. But in Diablo 2 people play with each other much more often than in GW. Simple reason - everyone has a character that is almost solo, so 8 people are much better than 1 person. But in GW people (like myself) are more about playing with AI due to stupidity of 95% of PuGs.
So answer for ,,will GW2 kill GW1'' is - No, because GW is almost dead now. It will die long time before GW2 will come out.

LoL. Not really, rep titles and anything based around points are grind. Then again, dont like them, dont do them get over it. I hate them soooo much so I dont do them. Its very simple really. Getting lvl 20 is part of the game, dont like it? Why are you even playing a game like this?

No, GW1 is slowly killing itself. No middle man required.
